Things to do in South Dakota: We’ll start with the Badlands, an otherworldly national park of rain and runoff carved rock- geology and fossil tours are favorites in this maze of knife edged pyramids and broad mesas. In the Black Hills, you’ll have to check out Spearfish Canyon (said to rival the Grand Canyon) for its creeks, craggy cliffs, gorgeous waterfalls and green forests. For camping and waterfront fun, follow the Missouri River to Lewis and Clark Recreation area, a giant park on the Lewis and Clark River with pools, disc golf, restaurants and naturalist retreats. We have to stop someplace, but the outdoor fun in South Dakota is immense. Roam with the bison at Custer State Park, head to the 2nd longest cave in the world at Jewel Cave, or take the Native American scenic highway to explore history and a gorgeous drive.
